British rock band Coldplay is currently travelling across the globe as a part of their Music Of The Spheres World Tour. Amidst their packed schedule, the band’s singer and songwriter, Chris Martin, opened up about the techniques he uses to battle depression. The singer gave fans an insight into his mental health struggles and offered support to those going through similar journeys.

Talking about his experience with depression, Chris Martin said, “Hi, this is Chris from the band Coldplay. We’re in Hong Kong… I’ve noticed that some people lately, including myself, are struggling a little bit with depression. So I wanted to talk to you about some things that are helping me on tour and in life in general, in the hope that they can help you as well.”

Chris talked about methods such as Freeform Writing, Transcendental Meditation, Proprioception, and the Costello Method. Additionally, he also mentioned Jon Hopkins’ music has also helped him. Here’s how these methods can help with mental health.

Freeform Writing – This involves writing continuously about your thoughts and feelings without concern for grammar or structure. Studies have shown that it can alleviate symptoms of depression by allowing individuals to articulate and confront their feelings.

Transcendental Meditation – This silent mantra meditation, when practised for 15–20 minutes twice daily, can significantly reduce stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. The practice promotes a state of restful alertness, which can enhance emotional well-being.

Proprioception-Based Therapies – Proprioception refers to the body’s ability to sense its position and movement in space. Therapies focusing on proprioception often involve physical activities that enhance body awareness. These activities stimulate the nervous system and can lead to better emotional regulation.

The Costello Method – Developed by Dr. Jim Costello, this is a movement-based therapeutic approach that emphasises healing through physical activity rather than traditional talk therapy. It focuses on using body movements to influence mental states.

In case you or anyone you know is showing signs of depression, seeking professional help is crucial.
