Deeptech Fund First Close: IIT Madras and Unicorn India Ventures Raise ₹453 Crore

The Deeptech Fund First Close has reached ₹453 crore as IIT Madras, IIT Madras Research Park and venture capital firm Unicorn India Ventures move ahead with their ₹1,000-crore IITM Unicorn Frontier Fund I.

The fund is designed to provide patient, early-stage capital to technology-intensive startups that can require several years to move from research and technical validation to commercial deployment. Nearly ₹55 crore has already been committed across four startups working in spacetech, quantum technology, battery technology and carbon capture.

IIT Madras Deeptech Fund Reaches ₹453 Crore First Close

The Deeptech Fund First Close was announced in Bengaluru at the IIT Madras Alumni Association’s Sangam 2026 conference.

While several reports initially described the milestone as ₹450 crore, IIT Madras and Unicorn India Ventures have subsequently reported the first close at approximately ₹453 crore. The fund has a target corpus of ₹1,000 crore, including a ₹400-crore greenshoe option.

The fund received approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) around three months before reaching the first close. The partners are targeting the final close by the end of 2026.

₹55 Crore Already Deployed Across Four Startups

The fund has already begun deploying capital rather than waiting for the complete ₹1,000-crore corpus.

Nearly ₹55 crore has been invested across four deeptech companies:

  • Hathor Rocket: A Chennai-based spacetech company developing semi-cryogenic and cryogenic rocket engines for small and medium satellite launch vehicles.
  • Quanstra: A Delhi-based quantum technology startup developing single-photon detection systems and quantum instrumentation.
  • Triolt Energy: A battery technology company developing lithium-ion cells for drones and fast-charging electric mobility.
  • Carbelim: A company working on bio-integrated carbon capture and air-purification systems using microalgae technology.

According to reporting from The Times of India, individual investments so far have ranged between ₹10 crore and ₹20 crore.

Focus on Spacetech, Quantum and Critical Technologies

The IITM Unicorn Frontier Fund I is intended for IP-led and engineering-heavy startups operating in technology areas where development cycles can be longer and capital requirements higher than those of conventional software businesses.

The fund’s stated focus areas include defence technology, space technology, semiconductors, manufacturing and robotics, AI infrastructure and generative AI, and health technology.

Within these categories, the fund is also looking at technologies such as quantum systems, battery technologies and climate-related solutions.

Investments are expected to be evaluated for factors including global export potential, import substitution and strategic technological capability.

Why Patient Capital Matters for Deeptech Startups

Deeptech companies often have a different funding timeline from software startups.

A company developing a rocket engine, quantum detection system or advanced battery chemistry may need extended periods of laboratory testing, engineering development, certification and field validation before generating substantial commercial revenue.

The fund therefore plans to provide capital over a longer investment horizon and reserve money for follow-on funding.

The fund is expected to build a portfolio of around 25 startups, with investments concentrated in early-stage companies where technologies are typically around Technology Readiness Levels 3 and 4. These stages generally represent technologies that have progressed beyond basic research but still require further development and testing.

IIT Madras Brings Research and Startup Ecosystem

IIT Madras Research Park and its incubation ecosystem have been involved in developing and commercialising technologies across areas including space, climate technology, electric mobility, semiconductors, quantum technology and defence.

The original fund announcement in February 2026 described a ₹600-crore base fund with a ₹400-crore greenshoe option, creating the potential for a total corpus of ₹1,000 crore. Unicorn India Ventures was selected as the fund manager.

The partnership is intended to connect IIT Madras’s research and startup pipeline with venture-capital expertise and longer-duration funding.

IIT Madras Alumni Support the Fund

IIT Madras alumni have played a significant role in the initial fundraising.

The Times of India reported that roughly one-third of the ₹453-crore first close came from overseas investors, while the remainder came from India. Individual investors and family offices accounted for much of the initial capital, with institutional investors expected to participate as the fund progresses toward its final close.

Financial Express reported that IIT Madras alumni accounted for around 30–35% of the first close, with the remaining capital coming from financial institutions and other limited partners associated with Unicorn India Ventures’ earlier funds.

Early Capital for India’s Emerging Technology Companies

The four initial investments illustrate the range of technologies being considered by the fund.

Hathor’s rocket-engine development addresses launch infrastructure, while Quanstra is focused on quantum instrumentation. Triolt Energy is working on energy-storage technology for drones and electric mobility, and Carbelim is developing carbon-capture and air-purification solutions.

Together, these investments cover different stages and technical challenges across space, quantum, energy and climate technology.

The fund’s stated strategy is to support startups as they progress from technical development toward commercialisation and potentially larger funding rounds.

Fund Targets Final Close by End of 2026

Following the ₹453-crore first close, IIT Madras and Unicorn India Ventures are working toward completing the fund’s targeted ₹1,000-crore corpus.

Institutional investors, corporations and banks are expected to participate in the later fundraising phase. The fund will also retain capital for follow-on investments in companies already in its portfolio.

The partners ultimately aim to build a portfolio of more than 25 deeptech companies, creating a funding pipeline for startups working on technologies that require substantial engineering and development before reaching the market.

What the Deeptech Fund Means for Indian Startups

The Deeptech Fund First Close gives IIT Madras and Unicorn India Ventures a substantial pool of capital to begin backing technology-intensive startups at an early stage.

The initial investments show a focus extending from rocket engines and quantum sensing to advanced batteries and carbon capture. The fund’s broader mandate also includes semiconductors, robotics, AI infrastructure, defence and healthcare.

With ₹453 crore already raised and nearly ₹55 crore deployed, the next stage will be the expansion of the portfolio and the effort to complete the ₹1,000-crore target corpus by the end of the year.
